Dunster Will Reinstate Maid Service Next Fall

Yard, Grad Dorms Maintain Porters

By Erik Ameitheatrof

Rumors that the Student Porter system would be discontinued in Dunster House crystallized yesterday when John U. Monro '32, Director of the College Financial Aid Center, announced that next year's porters will work only in Yard and graduate dormitories.

Monro listed three main reasons for the decision:

1. The undergraduates in Dunster House want maid service back.

2. The Yard, which is more convenient to most porters, provides enough work.

3. Porters are not required to clean bathrooms in the Yard.

The possibility that freshmen would be dissuaded from applying to Dunster because of the porter service also influenced the decision, Munro said.

Houses in Future

While admitting that the porter system works better in the Yard, Monro promised that the Dunster experiment will be repeated. "We're not done with the House plan," he said, "we'll be back.

"Publicity is slow," he continued. "In September, the work was bad, and the bad publicity is hurting us now. The work is good now."

The decision follows the suggestions proposed by George W. Miller III '52 in his report to the Student Council. The Council voted to support Miller's findings in a meeting last month. Miller said last night, "I am happy to see that the administration accepted at least in part the Council's report. This indicates that the Council can be of direct service to the undergraduates."

Both Monro and Allen H. Master '52, porter captain, expressed gratitude towards the co-operation of Dunster students in the porter experiment.

Dunster residents indicated their preference for maid service in a Student Council poll last term, while Yard and Graduate students favored porters.

"The poll might have played a heavy part in the decision," Master said. "We're going to try to continue to give Dunster residents the best service for the rest of the year."

The official release on the porter plan stated that the same number of Student Porters will be hired next year.
