Eliot House swimmers defeated Leverett last night, 30 to 18, and cinched the House championship in a meet that saw the House 150 yard medley record shaved by 1.9 seconds.
The previous record of 1:27.8 minutes was held by the 1951 Winthrop team. Ralph Blum, Claude Hooten, and Pliny Jewell of Eliot combined their mixed talents to finish in 1:25.9. Despite the broken record, the meet wasn't decided until the last event, the 200 yard free style medley, when, with the score at Eliot 23 and Leverett 18 Jewell came from behind in the last length to win by two feet and give his team seven points and the title. In other pool events Dudley and Dunster blasted Winthrop 35 and 28 to 6. Dunster then beat the Commuters 32 to 16. Lowell lost to Leverett 31 to 12 and to Eliot 37 to 10. The last meet had the Gold Coasters bowing to Kirkland 27 to 2-1.
Also at the Blockhouse, Army's ROTC baskeball team met the Air Force ROTC and barely edged the Airmen 22 to 20. The AROTC held command of the game until the final minute, when Dan Steiner broke a 20-all tie, pouring through the winning goal with seconds to go. The service championship will be undecided until the Army plays the NROTC this Thursday.
