Ufford Triumphs in Squash Finals; Crimson Wins National Title Again

Top-seeded Charlie Ufford whipped Williams' Dick Squires in the finals of the Intercollegiate Squash Singles tourney at Hemenway yesterday, to bag the Crimson's second successive National Championship.

Ufford, runner-up to Henry Foster '51 in last year's finals, wore Squires down with his smooth play and well-placed shots. The Williams ace, using a fast, hard driving attack, managed to take the first game, 17-16, but Ufford easily won the last three, 15-2, 15-8, 15-12.

Squires Beat Bacon

Squires, who suffered a non-serious twisted knee during his match with Ufford, had earlier beaten both Crimson Captain Jim Bacon and regular number two man, Dave Watts. He barely edged Bacon in Sunday morning's semi-final round, 15-12, 15-5, 12-15, 15-14, and took care of Watts in third round play Saturday, 11-15, 15-11, 15-11, 15-11. Ufford beat Dartmouth's Steve Foster, seeded seventh, in his semi-final match.

In the consolation tourney, the Crimson's Wis Wood lost to Jim Organ of Navy, who later took the title from Toronto's Hank Gaunt, Canadian champion, 15-13, 17-17, 10-15, 15-11.

At a league banquet Friday, officials declared Yale National Intercollegiate team champion on the basis of the number of individual matches won. The Elis had won ten and lost one, against Harvard's nine, one record in team play.
