Unbeaten Varsity Swimmers Meet Columbia Today

By Edward J. Coughlin

The varsity swimmers, undergoing the lull before the liquidation, have a breather with Columbia tonight, a week before the annual sacrifice to Yale. The Lion meet is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Indoor Athletic Building.

At the same time, the once-defeated freshmen travel to Dartmouth to take on the Indian yearlings.

With little or no difficulty, Hal Ulen's varsity should make it nine-out-of-nine this evening. The Lions, with only three lettermen left from last season, have two wins, one tie, seven losses on their record. Among the Columbia-conquerors are Navy. Princeton, Brown, and Army, teams the Crimson had defeated easily.

Experience Helps Little

Lion Coach Ed Kennedy has been forced to put a heavy load of responsibility on his three experienced men. Captain Fred Orrik, a sprinter, will have the least opportunity of the three to put in a good showing tonight. Orrik swims the 50 in about 24.8 and usually turns in about 55 seconds flat in the 100. The former time has been bettered by Harvard's Dave Hedberg, John McNamara, and Ron Huebsch.

Dick Auwarter may make a better showing in the backstroke and the individual medley, although he will have strong competition from the Crimson's Don Mulvey and Charlie Egan. The third experienced Lion is junior distance free-styler John Wuorinen. Wuorinen, however, has been defeated several times this season by sophomore teammate Chan Nauts, who has done 2:22 in the 220 and will probably take second to Harvard's John Millard.

Bill Brooks' Yardlings, led by sprinters Al Rapperport and Mauricio Toro, should win their sixth meet of the season today win their sixth meet of the season today at Hanover. The freshmen were undefeated in five starts and then dropped a close contest to Andover two weeks ago.
