Superior height carried the Princeton basketball team to a 65 to 55 win over the varsity in the Tiger's Dillon Gym last night. The Crimson will still be looking for its first Ivy League victory when it plays Penn tonight at 9:15 p.m. in Philadelphia.
Foster Cooper, 6 foot 8 inch Tiger center, and Dick Sisler, 6 foot 4 inch forward completely dominated both backboards, the Orange getting 68 rebounds, compared to the Crimson's 32.
Bill Dennis scored three field goals to get the varsity off to an 13 to 17 first quarter lead. From then on it was all Princeton, as Captain Chuck DeVoe, high man in the game with 21 points, helped the Orange to a big 41 to 23 half time lead. Bill Hickey's jump shot was the only Crimson field goal in the second period.
In the second half the Tigers retained their backboard power, and DeVoe kept making his long one handers to keep a low point margin. Dick Lionette, high man for the varsity, made 10 of his 18 points in the last period.
Against Penn, all the Crimson has to do tonight is stop Ernie Beck. Beck, the 6 foot 4 inch junior, set a new Eastern Intercollegiate Basketball League record against the Crimson, scoring 45 points in the Blockhouse earlier this year, and is currently first in the scoring race in the E.I.B.L.
Floyd Wilson and his once beaten Yardlings travel to Durham, New Hampshire today to play the University of New Hampshire freshmen at 2 p.m.
