The varsity basketball team will begin its second circuit around the Eastern League at 7 p.m. tonight in a well-filled gym in Hanover, New Hampshire. The game is a crucial one, for the Dartmouth team is one of the weakest teams in a very strong league, and if the still-victory-less Crimson cannot knock off the Indians, it will be a good but to finish last in the league.
Coach Norm Shepard will start the game team that he used against Pean Wednesday Ed Condon and Ed Krinsky at guards, Dick Lionette at center, and Gerry Murphy and Bill Dennis at forwards. Despite its inability to stop Ernie Buck, this quintet worked very well together against Penn, and Shepard feels it is the strongest combination he has yet used.
Darmouth is expected to open with the same team that beat the Crimson in overtime 69-59 last month. Six foot eight Paul Wisdom, one of the best shots in the Eastern League, will be the center, with push-shot specialist Bill Biggs and Kent Calhoun at the guards.
Roe Pierce, who proved unexpectedly able in the previous game, will start at one of the forward slots with high-scorer Brad Gieg at the other. Aside from Calhoun, whose main achievement is the large number of personal fouls he compiled last season, the Big Green team is well-balanced with four potential shooters. It is also taller than the Crimson starting five.
