Cross Country Skiers Place 5th at Hanover

Crimson cross-country skiers finished fifth in a field of ten yesterday afternoon in the opening of Dartmouth's Winter Carnival weekend.

Coach Graham Taylor commented: "This is the finest result we've ever had in big-league racing," and went on to praise Neil Dixon, John Hart, and Jim Lawson, who finished eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth respectively in the 55-man field. Their times were 60 minutes 11 seconds, 60 minutes 13 seconds, and 60 minutes 22 seconds, respectively.

New Hampshire finished first in the team scoring with 97.9 points. Dartmouth came in second wtih 95.3. The Crimson total was 91.5, only one point behind Denver, owner of the West's crack collegiate team. The Crimson also beat two Senior Division entrants, Middlebury and St. Lawrence, as well as its big Intermediate Division rival, Williams.

Later in the afternoon, John Houser finished twentieth in the slalom. Downhill and jumping contests will be held today.
