University Police Will Hold April Union Vote

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

University police won approval from the Massachusetts Labor Relations Board to hold an election to determine whether the force wants its own union. Harold Burke, the Board's executive secretary, said yesterday. The election will be held April 25.

At present the police are members of the University Employees Representatives Association. A group of officers, headed by Robert McCarthy, petitioned the M.L.R.B. last week for permission to break with the H.U.E.R.A. McCarthy would give no reason for the move other than that the officers "wanted to run their own affairs" H.U.E.R.A. president Daniel G. Mulvihill said that the police are now among the highest paid in the country, but refused to comment on the possible outcome of the election.
