Draft Exemption Bad, Hershey Report Says

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Draft deferments are an American disgrace, Major General Louis B. Hershey, Director of Selective Service, said recently. He feels we should be ashamed of ourselves for trying to get so many young men exempted from service.

In a report to the Adjutant General's Office, Hershey said that 12,000,000 men are now registered with draft boards, but 11,000,000 of them are deferred for various reasons.

"I think we are making a virtue out of escapism," he said, "We ought to be ashamed of ourselves."

In Washington, Senator Taft proposed that the start of U.M.T. be postponed for about three years. He added that Pentagon leaders should offer "to cut out four or five divisions" before even starting U.M.T.
