UMT Measure Passed By Senate Committee

Universal Military Training may become a reality this year. The Senate Armed Services Committee yesterday approved a bill that would start U.M.T. this fall if passed by Congress.

Senator Richard B. Russell (D-Ga,), chairman of the committee, said that the pool of trained manpower that would be built up in the U.M.T. reserve if the bill is enacted would allow reductions in the present strength of the armed forces.

Passage of the measure, which was approved unanimously by the 12-man committee, means that the Senate has declined to withhold its U.M.T. plan until passage of a similar bill in the House. Possible conflicts between the details of the two plans could mean further delay in the actual start of U.M.T.
