Varsity, '55 Swimmers Top Bruins

By Ronald P. Kriss

Crimson swimmers took nine out of ten events, sophomore Marv Sandler broke a University record for the 150-yard individual medley, and Hal Ulen's varsity squad swamped Brown, 61 to 23, for its sixth consecutive victory, last night at the Blockhouse.

In the preliminary meet, Bill Brooks' undefeated Yardlings, without the services of Captain Al Rapperport, made it a romp against the Brown freshmen, 59 to 24.

Bruin Don Cumeron had to break a record to score the lone victory for his team. His time of 2:13.9 in the 230-yard free-style betters a Brown varsity record of 2:14.3. Sandler's time of 1:41 tops a year old varsity mark for the 150-yard medley, 1:42.8.

Hedberg Cops Two Firsts

Dave Hedberg, with two firsts, had to defeat Bruin record-breaker Ralph Brisco in both events to become the Crimson's most prolific point-producer. Hedberg outswam Brisco in both the 50-yard and the 100-yard freestyle.

In the 300-yard medley relay, Don Mulvey, Ken Emerson, and Captain Bob Stroud combined to leave the Bruin anchor man churning futilely half-a-lap behind. Mulvey also won the 200-yard backstroke.

Pete Dillingham captured the low dives, which surprised nobody, amassing 114.8 points. Brown Co-Captain Otto Pfannkuch trailed him, with Crimson sophomore Pete Smalls third.

Ralph Zani continued his fine varsity performance, taking the 200-yard breast-stroke ahead of Brown Co-Captain Ken Arenberg. In the 440-yard freestyle, Cameron wasn't able to repeat his record-breaking stint, and Joe Millard scored the victory for the Crimson with teammate Dick Fouquet in third.

Even a combination of Bruin freestyle record-holders like Ron Wills, Brisco, and Cameron couldn't take the 400-yard freestyle relay. Stroud, John Jones, John McNamara, and Phil Pratt won the event with 30 yards to spare.

The varsity is aiming for win number seven this Saturday, when it meets Army at West Point.
