When Bruce Munro takes 25 of his varsity lacrosse players south next week, he will have some justifiable misgivings about the team. This year's team is probably one of the weakest in several years.

Gone are the past greats such as Phil Waring, who led the nation in scoring two years ago, Tom Crump, once All-New England defense star, and Steve Hartog, once considered the top goalie in the East. Instead of the powerful squad of last year, Munro has been forced to depend largely on inexperienced sophomores.

The team lost 20 lettermen from last year's squad due to graduation and transfers. Monro has only six returning men with numerals. The rest of the team is relatively inexperienced, with 11 sophomores, a few of whom have never played before this year.

In the traditional spring tour the squad will play five of the top teams in the country, one on each of five successive days next week. On Monday the Crimson will meet Navy, last year's national intercollegiate lacrosse champion, and highly favored by coaches to retain the title. Following Navy, the team will play the University of Virginia, Johns Hopkins University, Maryland, and Princeton, in that order. Each school is ranked within the top eight in the nation, and has won the national title at least once in the last six years.

Munro will depend heavily on Captain Dexter Lewis, Larry Coburn, and Don Davidoff in the attack. John Ogden is expected to excel in the goal, while Fred Sharf will bolster the defense Fuzz Stewart is Munro's only experienced mid-fielder.

Completing the starting lineup will be Lindsey Fischer and Jim Gale at midfield, and Elbridge Gerry and Roger Martin on defense.

Because of the team's inexperience, the Crimson began outdoor practice this year earlier than it generally has before so that the players have been able to improve their coordination and gain experience.

But the Crimson is expected to drop all five games next week. Last year's squad, which was the strongest in some years at least defense-wise, took only one game during the trip. It lost to four of the five teams on this spring's itinerary, beating only Stevens. However, this year Stevens has been replaced by Johns Hopkins, rated the seventh best in the country.

According to Coach Munro, the purpose of the annual trip is to gain experience for the team. Although the Crimson does not generally do too well against the top college teams, the experience gained is worth the journey, Munro maintains.
