Man Who Managed Clients for High-End Cambridge Brothel Network Pleads Guilty
Mrs. Mary B. Newman, wife of Edwin B. Newman, chairman of the department of Psychology, became the first woman in the history of Cambridge to win a seat in the state legislature as a result of Tuesday's election.
Mrs. Newman, running on the Republican ticket, placed second in a field of six candidates for the three seats from the Second Middlesex District. Republican Francis W. Lindstrom polled 13,134 votes to Mrs. Newman's 12,459.
From 1947 to 1950 Mrs. Newman held the presidency of the Cambridge League of Woman Voters. In 1951 she became vice-president of the state league. She resigned that poat in order to run for the legislature.
Mrs. Newman is a native of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, and attended Swarthmore College. This was her first campaign for a public office.
