Crimson tailback Dick Clasby--third-ranking ground-gainer in the nation--is a mere 166 yards short of Dick Kazmaier's single season Ivy League rushing record, according to figures released yesterday.
With 695 yards in 137 rushing attempts, Clasby is first in the Ivy League and a scant 43 yards behind Ron Williams (738) of Hardin-Simmons, and only eight back of Gene Filipski (703) of Villanova.
A 38-yard punting average gives Clasby the League lead in that department, while he is second in total offense with 1,017 yards, compared to Columbia's Mitch Price, who has picked up 1,157 yards. Price is third nationally in total offense.
John Culver stands third in Ivy League rushing, behind Clasby and Jerry Jones of Yale. The Crimson fullback has gained 463 yards in 91 attempts, for an average of better than five yards per try.
Culver is also second highest scorer in the Ivy group, and Clasby fourth. Yale end Ed Woodsum (who has played one more game than the Crimson backs) is tops with seven touchdowns and 54 points, while Culver has scored six times for 48 points, and Clasby has five tallies for 30 points.
The Crimson ranks third in team offense, with an average of 328 yards per game, compared to Princeton's 291.3 and Yale's 358. In team defense, the Crimson has yielded 257.8 yards per game, ranking behind Yale, Princeton, and Pennsylvania.
