GOPers Hold Ballroom Fete While YD's Sample Defeat

An estimated 1,000 deliriously exultant local Republicans packed the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Continental early this morning, while the University Democratic headquarters at the Student Activities Center lay virtually dark and deserted.

As early as 10:30 last night, with only fragmentary votes recorded, the GOP faction was already completely confined of victory. Gather around two television sets at either end of the ballroom, the Eisenhower supporters cheered wildly as the General piled up big leads in state after state.

From about 10:00 p.m. on, the atmosphere among the Democrats was in dramatic contrast. At no time were there more than 40 students in the S.A.C. By 11:00 p.m. this crowd had dwindled to 20, gathered dejectedly around two radios.

Stanley E. Tobin '53, president of the Young Democrats, admitted Stevenson's defeat at about 11:30 p.m. roughly two hours before the Governor himself conceded. "Although we are keenly disappointed," Tobin said, "we are not going to toss in the towel in the fight for Democratic principles. It's going to be very difficult if the Republicans gain control of the Congress as well as the Presidency, but we won't give up."

GOP Heads Foresee Landslide

Republican leaders confidently predicted a victory early in the evening. Both Edmund R. Schroeder '53, president of the Harvard Young Republican Club, and Early M. Kulp '52 1BS, former president of the Eisenhower for President Club, foresaw a GOP landslide.

At 1 a.m. Schroeder, jublilant at Eisenhower's overwhelming lead, said, "At this time I can say with full confidence that we have never had it so good. I am tremendously gratified to see that the American people have finally seen through the Democratic propaganda and have decided that there must be an end to corrupt and inefficient government by deficit and patronage."

Girls, Girls, Girls

While the University Republicans were joined in their celebration by roughly 400 girls from Radcliffe, Simmons, Wellesley, Wheelock and Emmanuel, only three Cliffedwellers were present at 52 Dunster Street.

At times the crowd in the ballroom seemed almost ready to begin some sort of demonstration, but for some reason it never did. The two Cambridge policemen in attendance reported the crowd was "very orderly all night."

Schneider's Silver Coronet Band, serenaded the victorious GOP throughout the evening and with Ike's victory assured, many Republicans and their dates abandoned the seats around the TV sets and danced in quiet jubilation.

In other areas near the Square, police reported "no unsual activity" all night long and well into the morning hours.
