Coach Bob Pickett welcomed 30 candidates for his first varsity wrestling squad meeting yesterday including six of his last year's lettermen.
Pickett calls the team "stronger than last year's and more balanced." The six lettermen are Ed Bursk, 123; Captain Johnnie Lee, 130; Bud Adams, 137; Icko Iben, 147; Hugh Chandler 157; and heavyweight George Bates. Several more will be out for the team after football season.
He expects good performances from Dick Keaping 130, Phil Burnaman, 137, Richard Hook, 157, and Charles Harding, 167.
Several freshmen have been working out for over a month, but yesterday was their first official practice.
Varsity Captain Lee won the A.A.U. 123-pound championship in 1951. Last spring he finished third in the A.A.A. meet and fourth in the N.C.A.A. tournament.
Both freshman and varsity squads broke even last year but dropped their matches with Yale. The first meet this year pits both squads against Boston University on December 10.
