Close to three million dollars in gifts were received by the University during the months of July, August, and September, it was announced yesterday.
The 2,805,139.90 received this year exceeded by more than one million dollars the gifts received during a corresponding period in 1951. It was, however, nearly the same amount received in 1950.
Of the total received this year, a sum of $421,131.79 was capital to be added to endowment and a total of $2,384,008.11 was for current use.
The announcement also revealed that the Divinity School had, as of this September, received less than $250,000 of the $600,000 pledged to it since its fund drive began last year. The Divinity School has an initial goal of $2,000,000 for 1954.
The largest donation to the University came from the Ford Foundation, which gave $473,463 for research in economics, behavior studies, law, and public administration.
The estate of Eugene Higgins was the largest non-foundation donation with a $250,000 gift for research and teaching in biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, dental medicine, and medicine. This is an annual gift that Harvard has received since 1950.
Other large gifts were received from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the American Cancer Society, and the estate of Mary McBurne Gardiner.
Corporation gifts for research and fellowships in biology, chemistry, business, dental medicine, medicine, and public health totalled $185,455.
