Freshmen Smash Bulldogs 20-0, for Their 3rd Victory

The freshman football team, with a powerful running attack that delivered three touchdowns, and a formidable line that kept the Bulldogs in their own kennels ground out a smashing 20 to 0 victory over the Yale freshmen yesterday afternoon at Soldiers Field.

Only three 15-yard penalties, and Bob Maragarita's heavy early substitutions kept the score down. The heavy, determined Crimson line kept Yale in its own territory all afternoon.

Jost Michelson, a quarterback playing tailback, decided the game on the third play from scrimmage. Cutting over his own right tackle, Michelson raced 55 yards for a touchdown. Pete Morrison converted to make it 7 to 0.

Blocked by Penalties

Penalties stymied two second quarter Harvard marches, but in the third period runs by fullback Art Painter, tailback Dick Oehmler, and wingback Dexter Lewis sparked a sustained 50-yard drive by the Yardlings. Oehmler, a very fast starter in the backfield, plunged over for the score, and Morrison kicked another point.

A poor kick led to the final score in the third quarter. Reserve fullback Bill Volmer, Lewis, and Oehmler carried, with Volmer going over from the three. A poor pass from center ruined Morrison's third attempt.

Tackles Orville Tice and Ed Rosenthal, guards Bill Meigs and Tom Jones, center Dave Bodiker, and right end John Pettiford consistently opened large holes in the Bulldog line. Pettiford, a 170-pounder noted more for his receiving than his blocking, turned in the best performance. Playing the strong side, he almost always made fine blocks.

Defensive tackle John Maher and linebackers Painter and Bodiker were outstanding on defense.
