"Senator McCarthy's approval of General Eisenhower was more important to the people of Wisconsin than the General's support of McCarthy," Frank P. Zeidler, Socialist mayor of Milwaukee, told a Phillips Brooks gathering yesterday.
Elaborating on McCarthy's strength, Zeidler said the senator has some "extraordinary and vigorous proponents in Wisconsin."
Communism Issue
"Communism is a tremendous issue in the mid-West," he continued. "Stalin has precipitated an irreversible process with the Korean War."
"Mid-Westerners," Zeidler declared, "see their sons leaving farms for Korea. And event hough they want an aggressive foreign policy, they don't want to fight. They blame all Communists for the war, and Senator McCarthy's attacks appeal to them."
"It's come to the point," he added, "where any criticism of McCarthy is blamed on the Communists."
Conservative Socialist
Asked if McCarthy has attacked his Socialist affiliation, Zeigler answered that he is "too insignificant a figure." He added that his Socialism is "conservative."
Zeidler came to Boston to address the "Society for Municipal Planning." He spoke on the problem of expanding municipal government.
