Substitutes and injuries shared the spotlight on Soldiers Field yesterday, as the varsity football team, still a little shaken from the rough Columbia game, started preparations for Saturday's contest with Washington University of St. Louis.
Three regulars took no part in the workout, which featured heavy scrimmaging by reserve players who had not seen much action against the Lions.
Most serious injury was George Yazejian's. The senior defensive guard was "bumped," to use Coach Lloyd Jordan's expression, and is now in Stillman.
Two-way center Buddy Lemay, victim of anan kle injury, watched the practice from the sidelines, as did defensive end Harvey Popell, recovering from a bad shoulder. Both may well be ready to go before Saturday.
Regular offensive right end Hank Rate was in action without pads, testing his bad leg for the first time since he twisted it against Springfield, over a week ago. Jordan could not estimate exactly when he would be ready for heavy duty.
Starting outside tackle Bob Stargel was back again, after missing the Columbia game because of an ear infection.
"He's a week behind the rest," Jordan said, referring to the amount of time Stargel's ailment kept him inactive.

The actual scrimmage--against a J.V. defense--featured the offensive work of sophomore tailback Paul Murphy, full-back Jerry Blitz, wingback Brian Reynolds, and quarterback Gerry Marsh. Hardy Cox also ran at tailback.
