Monteith's Double Miss Comes With Cox Absent

For a while during Saturday's victory over Dartmouth, it looked as if the absence of Hardy Cox would be quite damaging to the Crimson.

Cox, the second string tailback who was out with an injured leg, has held the ball for all of Bill Monteith's extra point kicks so far this year. The pair have been operating as a team.

With Cox unavailable, hard-working Dick Clasby was called upon to hold after Harvard's first touchdown.

Clasby, however, couldn't handle the pass from center, the ball squirted out of his hands, and when Monteith gamely tried to run the ball over, he was tackled short of the goal.

Murphy Holds Last Three Tries

Paul Murphy replaced Clasby on the subsequent three tries and Monteith kicked two to bring his season's record to 15 conversions in 18 attempts.

Going into the game, Monteith had a string of ten straight successful kicks going. The fumbled pass from center, while not his fault, broke the streak, but the fourth try was one of Monteith's rare bad efforts--off to the left of the goalposts.

The Crimson's victory was its first over Dartmouth in six years, its first Dartmouth win at the Stadium in 11 years, and the 26 points was the highest number made by a Crimson team against the Green since 1901.

The last Crimson eleven to beat Dartmouth in the Stadium (7-0 in 1941) had All-American "Chub" Peabody and was the last to beat both Yale and Princeton.

Dartmouth halfback Russ Smale, and speedy, reminded many in the stands of Columbia's Bob Mercier. Smale, a five-foot-nine, 170 pounder, gained 85 yards in 20 attempts Saturday, most of them by twisting and dodging.

Joe Ross, aided by a strong wind, enjoyed a good day kicking off for the Crimson, several of his kicks going into the end zone.

His third period kick was fumbled by Dartmouth's Roger Warner deep in the end zone and then rolled out for an automatic touchback.
