Ready Denies Democrats Permit; Calls Ike Motorcade 'Just A Visit'

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Cambridge Police Chief Patrick F. Ready yesterday conclusively killed Democratic plans for a Saturday afternoon rally in Harvard Square.

"That's definitely out," Ready said, "I've made my decision."

Wednesday night, Ready hinted he might not issue a permit requested by Democratic State Headquarters for a Stevenson-Dever-Kennedy demonstration, which would have involved a 52-piece band a jazz band and a motorcade of "jalopies."

When he finally decided to withhold the permit, he commented, "There will be no rallies in Harvard Square by either party at any time in the campaign . . . Harvard Square is too busy a place. A rally would interfere with M.T.A. transportation and it would interfere with the free flow of traffic . . . It would just cause trouble up there."

Asked to explain why Republican nominee Dwight D. Eisenhower had been permitted to drive through the Square in a long motorcade last Tuesday. Ready said,". . . it was just a visit." The Chief denied charges by Democratic rally-organizer Ray Lundi that "pressure has been brought to bear."

"Everyone Satisfied"

Commenting on the reaction of the Democrats to his refusal, Ready said, "Of course, they were kind of peeved about the whole thing. But after we talked it over for a while everyone was satisfied."

Ready labelled untrue a statement attributed to him in yesterday's Boston Traveler which said, ". . . I suspect the whole thing is a Harvard CRIMSON stunt." The Chief claimed, "I never said that. These newspapers have me saying things like that all the time. For my money, the CRIMSON's okay."

But Ready then added, "You'd be surprised at the number of people around the Square who hadn't even read the Traveler and who said that anyway."
