Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
While I regret your decision to support Stevenson, I concur with your belief that one who supports a presidential candidate should ordinarily support also the legislative candidates who can make his administration effective. At the same time, I think your making of exceptions for Senator Lodge and Representative Heselton is amply justified.
Your own logic applies just as much to the state government as to the federal government. You have announced your support of Mr. Herter for Governor. This should mean that, except in exceptional cases, you also support Republican candidates for the state legislature. I wish you would say so.
This point applies particularly to the Republican candidate for the State Senate from the district in which Harvard is located, Copley Amory, Jr. The Democratic incumbent, Daniel O'Brien, has made himself the leader of the forces which have been seeking to destroy good local government in the City of Cambridge and to return to the old, corrupt ways which prevailed before the reforms made a decade age. Even if you were supporting a Democratic state administration, you should make an exception to oppose Danny O'Brien. Robert Braucher Professor of Law
The only reason for a blanket endorsement of Republican candidates for the state legislature would be the CRIMSON's support of the state GOP's platform and its candidate's voting record. We support neither of these Rather we backed Herter primarily because he is the candidate opposing Dever and the Dever machine, and because his personal qualities--not his opinions--make him a suitable alternative to the incumbent.
