CHARLIE UFFORD (above), number one squash player for the Crimson varsity, won the tenth annual intercollegiate invitation squash racquets championship in New York on Saturday, December 29. Ufford, seeded second, defeated Dick Squires of Williams in the finals of the tournament played at the Princeton Club courts in New York.
Ufford, playing in the championships for the second year, beat Squires in four games, 15-9, 16-17, 15-9, 15-10. Last year Henry Foster, Harvard captain and number one, also won the invitation championship, defeating Blair Murphy of Yale in the finals. In 1950 Ufford got as far as the semi-finals, forcing Foster to go five games before losing.
This year Ufford beat Bob Dewey of Yale in the semi-finals in five games, 15-12, 15-6, 9-15, 10-15, 15-5. Squires defeated the first-seeded Murphy in his semi-final match in straight games.
