N.Y. Times Double Crestic Uses Quotation From Hughes' Book

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Anybody who passed long enough in his Collegeward journey to solve the Double Crostic in yesterday's New York Times would have found the name of the hidden author vaguely familiar.

But H. Stuart Hughes, assistant professor of History, claims he had no advance warning the Times would anagrammatize a quotation from his recent book: "An Essay for Our Times."

"I'm flattered, though," he admitted.

The complete passage (for these who couldn't cope with the Times' definitions):

"There is little room for compromise. Our best course is to cultivate intellectual honesty, a good temper, and a broad appreciation of the ultimate humanistic goals that unite and transcend the competing ideologies of our era."
