Varsity Swimmers Whip Springfield 58-26; Freshmen Defeat Brookline

There were no heroes, no records, and almost no spectators in the Blockhouse last night, as the Crimson swimmers swept past Springfield, 58 to 26. Earlier, Bill Brooks' freshmen also took their second meet of the season, out-swimming Brookline High School, 53 to 22.

Working into shape for the league-opener with Pennsylvania Saturday, the Crimson varsity took eight out of ten events, with only one close contest. The tight affair came, oddly enough, in Harvard's one sure-fire-win event, in which Springfield low board ace Pat Huddleston gave Pete Dillingham a running dive for his money. Dillingham finished a scant eight points ahead, with 106.

The two Indian wins came in the 150-yard medley and the 200-yard breaststroke. Springfield freshman Jack Mayers turned in a good 1:39.2 time in the comparatively new medley race, and Indian Bill Yorzyt, who was second to Dave Hedberg in the 220 freestyle, finished the breaststroke ahead of Harvard's Ralph Zani and Ken Emerson.

Pleasant surprise of the evening for Hal Ulen and the Harvard on-lookers was John McNamara, who swam smoothly in both the 400-yard relay and the 50-yard sprint. After one false start, the football tailback defeated teammate Ron Huebach in the dash event, with a time of 24.1 seconds.

Hedberg was the lone two-event winner of the evening, taking the 220 in a fair time and turning in a good 53.3 in the 100-yard dash. Don Mulvey finished ahead of Springfield's Mayers in the back-stroke, and combined with Emerson and Captain Bob Stroud in the medley relay win. In the 440-yard freestyle, sophomore Mary Sandler finished far ahead of his competition in 5:17.9.
