275, Largest Class Yet, Enter 'Cliffe In Friday Assault

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Radcliffe's girls -- vintage 1955 -- will assemble for the first time tomorrow when 275 incoming freshmen register at Longfellow Hall from 2 to 4 p.m.

This is one of the largest entering classes in Radcliffe history and, although exact figures were not revealed, 'Cliffe officials said that more girls had applied for entrance than in any previous year.

From 178 Schools

One hundred seventy-eight schools are represented in the new class. Private schools predominated slightly, with 142 students, or 61 percent of the whole class. One hundred and twenty-two new freshmen were listed as having attended both private and public school.

Geographically, the class seems to be concentrated in the Northeastern United States, although the students come from 36 different states. Massachusetts, for example, leads with 77, with New York (55) and Connecticut (26) trailing. The South is very lightly represented, with only one state, Virginia, sending as many as six girls. The Far West also lacks strength: '55 boasts only eight Californians.

And Five Foreign Countries

The Class will have the usual foreign flavor, as girls from five other countries are expected to register.

In addition, there will be the significant total of 15 transfer students, four of them from Smith. Eleven other colleges sent one student each.
