The Army pitchers were not inspiring, the Army fielders suffered frequent mental blackouts, and the Army baseball team collectively bowed to the Crimson, 16 to 5, on a sunny Soldiers Field Saturday.
Bob Ward started for Harvard for the second time in four days and combined a five-hit stint with ten strikeouts. Ward was sufficiently erratic in the first and sixth innings to let in five West Point runs on three hits.
But with Charlie Walsh breaking out of a batting slump with a single, double, and home run, Bennie Akillian doubling and tripling, and Johnny White contributing a homer, the Crimson also made the most of its 13 hits off four Army pitchers.
Walsh Doubles
Each team scored two runs on a single hit in the opening inning. The Cadets combined two walks and a triple by right fielder Tom Fitzgerald for an early lead, but these were immediately counteracted by walks issued to White and Akillian and Walsh's sharp double to center.
The Crimson added two runs in the third on a single hit. White reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Akillian made first, flattening football-quarterback-first-baseman Bobby Black with a perfect, if unintentional block, and White went to third on an error by the Cadet second baseman. Walsh again batted both men in with a single.
Don Wilson replaced Jim Jones on the mound for Army, and the Cadets folded. With two away in the fourth and Tom Cavanaugh on second with a double to left, Ed Foynes beat out an infield hit, Ralph Robinson singled, and White cleared the bases when left fielder Frank Winfield badly misjudged his harsh drive. Benny Akillian followed with a triple and came in on a bad throw by the right fielder.
A single, two walks, and an error by White produced two West Point runs in the top of the sixth. Then in the last half of the inning, White was hit by a pitch, Akillian doubled, Walsh homered, Russ Johnson tripled, Kev Reilly singled, and the Crimson had four more runs.
The final three Harvard runs came in the eight on a walk, singles by Johnson and Reilly, a two-base error, and a long fly to center by Cavanaugh.
At the same time, the Yardlings defeated Northeastern, 6 to 3.
