Time Labels Fairbank 'Apologist' for Reds

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

John K. Fairbank, professor of history, is labeled "a longtime apologist for Communist China" in the current issue of TIME magazine. The statement appears in a four page review of "The China Story," by Freda Utley.

The article states that Dean Acheson, Philip Jessup, Owen Lattimore, and a few other diplomats were "chiefly responsible" for "making the mistake of a century in China."

TIME elaborated, "The diplomats, says Utley, were buttressed by 'a minority of writers, professors, and lecturers, representing the Chinese Communist views of the State Department.'" Fairbank was included in this list.

Fairbank, who is in Chicago for the Associated Harvard Club meeting, could not be reached for comment last night.
