The varsity tennis team yesterday beat M.I.T. 7 to 2 on the Engineers' courts in its second straight match without number one man, Charlie Ufford. The Yardling squad trounced the M.I.T. freshmen 9 to 0 at Soldiers Field to remain undefeated.
The Crimson swept all three doubles matches, two of them in three sets. Coach Jack Barnaby's doubles combinations seem finally set after winning nine out of the last 12 matches. Today Bob Bramhall and Bill Goodman won at one, Art French and Dave Watts at two, and Hugh Nawn and Berke Johnson at three. When Ufford returns, he will fit into one of these pairs.
French, Bayard Robb, Paul Tobias, and Gerry Murphy all won in singles at the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth positions respectively. The four beat their opponents in straight sets.
Freshmen Win Easily
John Rauh and Herb Stone, playing first doubles, led the freshmen by winning, 6-0, 6-0. The other Yardlings also won easily as M.I.T. won only 15 games in 18 sets, the minimum for nine matches.
Gene Mann had the toughest match, but finally topped his first singles opponent, 7-5. Mann, Don Bossart at four, and Donn Spencer and Bossart at the second doubles spot all kept their spring winning streaks going. John Carollo also won two matches, at fifth singles and with Mike Ward at third doubles.
