The catchers made the difference yesterday, when the Yardling nine defeated M.I.T. 7 to 6, on the freshman diamond. The Yardling base runners ran wild on the weak-armed George Thurlow, M.I.T. catcher, to put the winning runs on scoring position, M.I.T. players tried to steal only twice but Ron Peyton threw them out both times.

Crimson state John Cooke pitched to three batters before he settled down. Leo Balandis got the first of his three singles, followed by a long triple to left by Don Dix. A fielder's choice brought in the center fielder for the second run of the inning. Cooke allowed two rather tainted runs until relieved in the sixth inning. Altogether he was touched for six hits.

The freshmen picked up one run in the first, and two more in the second on Peyton's single, a walk to Cooke, Jeb Bray's hit to left, and a deep fly Singles by Bob Grump, Dick Scheer, and Howie Shurdut provided the fourth run in the third .

After tying the score in the sixth on his own single Bob White, M.I.T. pitcher, gave the freshmen the winning three runs by issuing five straight bases on balls.

John Arnold, after pitching well during three innings of relief work, walked five men in the ninth to give M.I.T. two runs and make the game closer.
