8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
The House and Senate Armed Services Committees have agreed to put off debate on the draft and Universal Military Training from two to four weeks. During that time they will be conducting hearings on the firing of General Douglas MacArthur.
Chairman Richard Russell (D-Ga.) of the House committee and Chairman Carl Vinson (D-Ga.) of the Senate group met four times yesterday with a joint conference committee.
The conference committee accepted a Senate provision requiring all draftees to serve eight years on active duty and in the reserves instead of the present five. The House had proposed a limit of six years. The joint group also eliminated deferments for married men of draft age without children.
