WORCESTER, April 26--An error by Johnny White resulted in an unearned run in the seventh inning here today to give the Holy Cross baseball team a 1 to 0 victory over the Crimson. Sophomore Bob Ward pitched, and lost, a two-hit ball game.
Protected by flawless fielding, Crusader right-hander Jim O'Neill effectively scattered six hits, including two doubles and a triple, and three walks over eight innings to give Coach Jack Barry a birthday shutout over his former Philadelphia teammate, Stuffy McInnis.
Ward mixed fast and slow pitches to hold the Crusaders all but helpless. But one of the hits off the slim righty was a triple, following White's error in the unlucky seventh.
O'Neill gave up a hit an inning in each of the first, second, fifth, and sixth. Ed Foynes opened the game with a double when Holy Cross left fielder Dick Hogan tried for a diving backhand of his drive down the foul line and couldn't hold the ball. But the next three men were retired in order.
Kevin Reilly tripled with two away in the second O'Neill prevented a run producing error by backing up third on the wild throw-in. Tom Cavanaugh grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.
O'Neill in Trouble
After striking out Russ Johnson in the fifth, O'Neill, got himself temporarily in trouble. Reilly, who had played superbly on defense all afternoon, hit a one-and-one pitch down the right field line for two bases. O'Neill then walked Cavanaugh, struck out Ward, and walked Foynes to load the bases. However, Ralph Robinson grounded out.
Ward had given away nothing but Frank Dyson's leadoff single until the seventh, when Hogan's hard grounder went through White and, with two away, catcher George Vomacka tripled to left over Bennie Akillian's head. White and Walsh caused excitement by singling in the ninth, but White was thrown out at third by the Crusader catcher to kill the threat.
