Crimson Nine Plays at Holy Cross Today; Opposing Coaches Played Together for A's

McInnis Will Start Ward as Pitcher in Hope For .500 Slate, 2 in Row Over Crusaders

By Edward J. Coughlin

Two members of the famed Philadelphia $100,000 infield will be master-minding this afternoon when the varsity baseball team meets Holy Cross at 3:30 p.m. at Worcester's Fitton Field.

Stuffy McInnis, former Athletics first baseman, will be trying to repeat last year's win over the Crusader squad coached by ex-teammate Jack Barry, erstwhile shortstop for the A's. The 1950 victory ended a six year drought of Crimson losses to a series of good Worcester nines. Stuffy's only comment: "They're always strong. But I'd like to beat Barry again."

While the Crimson will be seeking its second win in four games, the Crusaders have a one-and-one record. Holy Cross has no cage for early spring practice, so Barry's squad had to start its season and its conditioning late.

May Start Ward

McInnis has Bob Ward, who stopped Amherst on three hits last Wednesday, ready for the Crusaders. Barry, will start right-hander Jim O'Neil, and can use lefty Dick Dogdon, who pitched a no-hit game Saturday against Springfield, for relief.

Since the whole top of the Crimson batting order bats left-handed with Ralph Robinson in right field, McInnis has been substituting righty Walt Greeley for Robinson to break up the southpaw-slugging string against left-handed pitchers. Robinson will start, however, with O'Neil on the mound. With Ed Foynes, who was injured last weekend, ready to play, there will be no changes in the regular Harvard lineup.

Cross Has Power

This season's Crusader squad is slow a field but relatively strong at bat. Top men at the plate so far this year have been center fielder Art Moossman and shortstop John Concannon and the Cross has strength low in the order in co-captains Ralph Gabhardt and Bob Heon.
