General to Tell Next Week Whether He Will Visit Harvard

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

General Douglas MacArthur will let the University know by next week whether he plans to come to Commencement ceremonies this June, Colonel Raymond Bunker '24, personal aide to the General, told the CRIMSON last night.

So far, Bunker said, MacArthur's staff has not been able to get a schedule together as far ahead as June. But MacArthur has told them that Harvard is to get "highest priority" on the list.

It is therefore presumed that, unless something unexpected happens, the General will come to receive the honorary Doctor of Laws degree that the University awarded him in 1946.

General Pleased

Under a long-standing rule of the University, an honorary degree winner must come to a commencement to receive his award. Another tradition, is that the President does not announce the names of those coming to receive such degrees until the morning of the ceremonies. Although the announcement of MacArthur's degree was made several years ago, the tradition will be followed in this case as usual if MacArthur decides to come.

Bunker said that the General had been very pleased about the degree in 1946 and had been looking forward to receiving it. He could not say, however, whether MacArthur's aides will make any announcement about his decision when it is made.

"We expect to have a complete schedule some time next week," Bunker explained, "after the General's trip to Chicago is taken care of."
