Strength throughout the ranks but no outstanding player is the keynote for this year's varsity golf team, according to Coach Frank Richart. With four lettermen back from last year and a team average under 80, Richart expects to field seven consistent players for every match but no sub-par shooter.
A ladder challenge tournament has been running for two weeks now and the top eight men are fairly well set in their playing positions. Dusty Burke has risen from fourth to first by shooting under 75 on the short home course at Dedham. Captain Doug Wilde, who came in with a 74 recently, holds the second position.
Sophomore Dave Hedberg usually plays third followed by lettermen Dave Gorman and Paul Weissman at fourth and fifth. Mitch Rosenholtz and Bill Timpson complete the seven-man team. Besides these, Scott Lukins, who has already played one match, and Bill Caswell have shot rounds under 80 to keep them in the running. Bill Rydell is ninth man on the ladder.
The varsity schedule for this spring includes 11 dual matches and the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf League championship. Two meets were played on a trip to White Sulphur Springs, Virginia, during spring vacation, and two more have so far been played in Boston. With the team now carrying a 2-2 record, Richart hopes at best to finish-with a record of just above .500.
A win over Yale would make a good season for the Crimson, however. The two teams play on May 5 at the Dedham Country and Polo Club. Richart hopes that the home course will give his players a two-stroke advantage over the long-hitting Elis. On the other hand, the Blue will have the upper hand in the E.I.G.L. match, which will be played this year on May 11 and 12 at New Haven.
The eastern championship match is the only one that is played on a medal basis. Richart will field five men in the qualifying round of this event. He will be satisfied if they finish third or fourth, though he gives them an outside chance to win, in spite of Yale's being at home.
Besides B.U. and M.I.T., whom it has already defeated, the varsity still has to meet Brown, Wesleyan, Babson, Williams, Holy Cross, Amherst, and Dartmouth in match play. On the southern trip, the golfers lost to Colgate, Washington and Lee, and Ohio University in a round-robin tournament.
