Theatre Committee Plan Awaits Approval; Music, Drama, Film Facilities Suggested

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A Student Council sub-committee report, recommending that the University construct a public Arts Center including facilities for music, drama, films, and radio, will be handed to the Council for official consideration next week, is was learned last night.

The report, written by a seven man committee headed by David Bowen '51, comes after two months of investigation by the group-investigation which involved such alumni as Robert E. Sherwood '17, Donald Oenslager '23, Robert Edmond Jones '10, John Mason Brown '23, and Harry T. Levin '33.

Although an earlier group had suggested that the University limit its construction to a theatre, the committee formed in March will claim that Harvard's needs have so grown that only a public arts building would be satisfactory.

Awaits Council Nod

No official action can be taken on the report until after it has been approved by the Council, but there are reports that a member of the Board of Overseers is already working on the problem.

The Committee is comprised of students involved in many of the University's art groups and once the report is submitted the Council is expected to have open discussion of the recommendation.

Following this discussion, the Council will draw up a new report for the consideration of the Administration.

The committee is composed of members of WHRB, Playwright's Group, Harvard Theatre Group, Radcliffe Dance Society, and other organizations.
