Corporation Gives U. N. Official Leave of Absence for Extra Year in International Crisis

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Ralph J. Bunche will be unable to take up his position as Professor of Government here next year because of the pressing international situation, the CRIMSON learned last night. The Corporation has granted the United Nations official an additional year's leave of absence, making possible his appearance here in the fall of 1952.

In a meeting with Provost Buck last month, Bunche is understood to have explained that he did not wish to give up his U. N. duties during the present world crisis. He did not specifically request a second extension, according to reports, but the Corporation was willing to grant the additional leave of absence.

Bunche's appointment was originally voted by the Corporation in January, 1950, and approved by the Overseers in April. The appointment became effective on July 1 at which time Bunche was given a one year's leave of absence since he did not want to withdraw from his U. N. activities at that time.

A professor at Howard University before entering government service, Bunche is scheduled to give courses in the field of international relations when he takes up his appointment here. He is also expected to assume the chair vacated by Payson S. Wild, Jr. two years ago.

Bunche currently is Director of Trusteeships for the United Nations. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in 1948-49, as U. N. mediator in the Palestine dispute.
