Coach Dolph Samborski will send his freshman baseball nine to the diamond for the first time this afternoon at 3 p.m. to meet Governor Dummer Academy on Soldiers Field.
Samborski said that the hitting at a practice game yesterday afternoon had been encouraging. Chuck Scheer, slated to bat in the clean-up slot today, blasted out a good triple. George Donovan, Nett Bortz, and George Anderson also seemed to be connecting.
Right-handed hurler Pat Groper is scheduled to start today, but Dave Lanier a lefty, will be on hand if Groper runs into trouble. Lanter will start against Tufts Saturday. John Arnold, a fast ball pitcher, is also ready. His left wrist was not broken in a recent fall, as had been feared.
"All in all," Samborski said, "the team that stops us will have to be pretty good." He called his squad, especially the pitching staff, "exceptionally well balanced."
Governor Dummer has had only two practice games so for, and its starting line-up has not yet been fixed.
Samborski yesterday cut his team to 21 players, many of whom will see action today, as Samborski expects to substitute freely.
The lineup:
Maesaka, 2b; Shurdut, 2b; Anderson, as; Scheer, lf; Donovan, cf; Bortz, rf; Kiggen, 1b; Peyton, c; Groper, p.
