Harold Winkler '36, visiting lecturer in Government, will speak on "Academic Freedom vs. the Loyalty Oath" tonight in the Kirkland Junior Common Room. He was dismissed by the University, of California last summer for refusing to sign a non-Communist statement.

Four University professors have turned down summer teaching posts at California as a result of the loyalty oath controversy.

Winkler joined the faculty in February. In his talk tonight, he will discuss the legal aspects of the California case. He is a member of the committee seeking a supreme court decision to outlaw loyalty oaths in colleges. A test case is now pending in the California supreme court.

Tonight's lecture is sponsored by the Liberal Union.

Winkler is teaching two graduate seminars this spring, including. Nineteenth Century Political Thought.
