Hearings on the proposed reduced commuter fares for college students will be held Monday in the State House of Representatives, it was learned last night.
A meeting has been scheduled for this Friday at the Boston University news office for student commuters who intend to actively support the measure.
The proposal to reduce fares for students was introduced in the State Legislature several weeks ago. It was intended to lessen the financial burden imposed on college students who do not live at school.
Similar plans have been in the air ever since the controversial fare increase went into effect early last year. The present proposal is similar to the one in effect in New York City, where high school students travel to and from school at half the register fares.
Members of the Transportation Committee were uncertain last night about the chances of the measure passing the full House of Representatives. The bill, if passed, would decrease transit revenues, and some felt that it would be unfair to give college commuters a reduction at the expense of the rest of the population.
