Vinson Proposes Modified Bill for 18 Year Old Draft

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Chairman Carl Vinson (D., Ga.) of the House Armed Services Committee yesterday introduced a compromise bill to draft 18-year-olds. The committee has tentatively approved it. Final action is expected early next month, before the expiration of the present draft law in July.

The bill provides that no draftee can go overseas before his nineteenth birthday. It also stretches the period of service for draftees from 21 to 26 months.

Not Effective Now

Vinson conceded that this program cannot be put into effect for two to five years, or at least until the present world crises is eased.

Major General Maxwell Taylor, Assistant Chief of Staff of Operations, also announced that there are no plans now for calling additional Guard divisions, though some Guard and Reserve elements of unit size are scheduled to be alerted.
