Strong Columbia Fencers Conquer Crimson, 17 to 10

A strong Crimson game in all three weapons held Columbia's fencers, rated number one in the country, to a 17 to 10 victory over the varsity in New York yesterday.

Win Overholser, John Smith, and Byron Morton turned in outstanding performances in the epee match as they came from behind to win, 5 to 4.

Forrest Carter was the Crimson's top competitor, winning his three bouts in the sabre match. The Lion team was too powerful for other Crimson sabre men, and slashed its way to a 6 to 3 victory.

The foils event was an almost hopeless cause, as Columbia has its main strength there. Only Chris Martin and Neil Jertson were able to score with one bout each as Columbia won the foils, 7 to 2.

Foils: Neilson (C) beat Jertson, 5-2, and Sollee, 5-1. Cherubim (C) beat Sollee, 5-2, and Martin, 5-2. Jertson beat Cherubim (C), 5-4. Rubin (C) beat Martin, 5-3, Jertson, 5-2, and Sollee, 5-3. Martin beat Stratos (C), 5-2.

Epee: Chafetz (C) beat McNair, 3-2, Overholser, 3-1, and Smith, 3-1. Overholser beat Winnograd (C), 3-0, and Sezeik (C), 3-0. Smith beat Winnograd (C), 3-1, and Sezcik (C), beat Morton, 3-0.

Sabre: Carter beat Krajcir (C), 5-3, Leibel (C), 5-2, and Schafer (C), 5-4. Krajcir (C) beat Zeil, 5-2, and MacConaughy, 5-1. Leibel (C) beat MacConaughy, 5-4. Schafer (C), beat MacConaughy, 5-3, and Zeil, 5-3. Economakis (C) beat Zeil, 5-3.
