8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
"Her Sexcellency" Sally Rand and comedian Morey Amsterdam will bring big name talent to a Freshman Smoker for the first time in three years at 8:30 p.m. tonight in Sanders Theatre. A beer guzzling fest in Memorial Hall with half a gallon of hops for everyone will follow the entertainment.
Dean Leighton allowed the famous fan-dancer to come, although he refused to let Peaches, another stripper, make an appearance. Leighton permitted Sally to feature Smokers twice before, in 1938 and 1941.
Miss Rand promised to surprise everybody and come with her clothes on. She plans to teach the Yardlings a "Lesson in History" and also to show them what the "Thing" of popular music fame really is.
Last time she came to a Smoker, several M.I.T. students kidnapped her and the freshmen had to disguise themselves as Engineers to stage a rescue. When she finally reached the stage, she spoke about "Stage Door Johnnies." In 1938, Miss Rand gave an intellectual talk on "How to be Intelligent Though Educated."
Amsterdam, a radio and television comic, will ply his usual rapid-fire line of gags and ad libs.
Amateur talent will form the remainder of the program. One of the highlights is a "chugalug" contest, to see who can drink a quart of beer the fastest. Several prizes will also be offered in a raffle.
Wednesday, the Smoker Committee held a pipe-smoking contest (above) in the Union. Two pipes and a can of tobacco were given for prizes.
