Varsity Wrestlers Trounce Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Feb. 17--Carnivalgoers were overwhelmed this afternoon as the varsity wrestlers cleaned up against Williams, 21 to 8, in what was expected to be a close contest.

Ephmen and their dates packed Lasell Gym for one of the big events of the Winter Carnival weekend and watched Johnnie Leo win a clean decision over his opponent to start the Crimson rolling. Captain Dave Smith followed with a quick pin in a little over a minute of the first period.

A second period escape and time advantage gave underdog Icko Iben a 3 to 0 victory over Bob Shorb. Bud--Adams then tied his man, while Russ Harris, who replaced Teddy Anderson in the lineup, found Bill Callaghan too fast and dropped a 5 to 2 decision. Neil Hastie also lost a hard-fought match by a decision.

The Crimson sailed through the last two matches with a pin by Charlie Keith and a run-away decision by Humphrey Heidtmann.

Meanwhile, Dave Shapiro was winning the 135-pound class of the New England Open A.A.U. meet at Attleboro on Saturday.

123--Leo (H) decisioned Katcher, 7-0; 130--Smith (H) pinned Williams with a double bar arm at 1:35; 137--Iben (H) decisioned R. Shorb, 3-0; 147--Adams tied P. Shorb, 1-1; Callaghan (W) decisioned Harris, 5-3; 167--Carleton (W) decisioned Hastie, 8-4; 177--Keith (H) pinned Brayer with a half nelson and crotch hold at 4:14; unlimited--Heidtmann (H) decisioned Ordeman, 13-4.
