Lions Earn Only One Second

The varsity swimming team swept to its third straight victory on Saturday, routing Columbia, 66 to 9, in Morningside Pool. It was the sixth less in seven meets for the floundering Lions.

Sixty-six points is the highest total a Crimson team has compiled in four years. The swimmers missed a perfect meet by two points when the Lions took their only second in the 200-yard backstroke. (68 to 7 is a "shutout" swimming score.)

Best performance of the afternoon was John Steinhart's 2:17.00 in the 200-yard backstroke, a new pool record and only eight-tenths of a second short of the College mark, which Steinhart not three weeks ago in the Army meet.

Captain Bob Berke in the 220-yard freestyle, sophomore Dave Hedberg in the 100-yard freestyle, Pete Dillingham in the dive, and Steinhart in the backstroke all successfully extended their undefeated streaks. Crimson opponents have won only one race in three meets, the 440-yard freestyle by Army's Jack Craigie.
