PROVIDENCE, Feb. 10--Brown was strong where Harvard was not, and that meant the difference as the Bruins muscled their way to a 17 to 13 victory over the Crimson wrestlers in Marvel Gym this afternoon. The freshmen also lost, 21 to 10, for their first defeat.
The varsity gained ten quick points as Johnny Lee and Captain Dave Smith executed second-period pins and, after Icko Iben had dropped a decision, the visitors finished their scoring on a decision by Bud Adams.
At this point, Brown unleashed its fine middle and light-heavyweight representatives, who accounted for two decisions and one fall and gave the Bruins a 14 to 13 lead. With the outcome still depending on the heavyweight bout, Bruin Captain John Chernak rallied to decision Humphrey Heidtmann, who did not appear to have benefitted from an extended layoff and was not in the best of shape.
While a decision by Heidtmann would have meant a victory, it is still true that Harvard badly needs more able men at 157, 167, and 177. Al Sawyer, who had figured to help out at 157, recently dislocated an elbow.
The freshmen scored on a pin by Phil Waring, a decision by Captain Chick Chandler, and a draw by Jack Pollard. Oakleigh Thorne, Myles Cunningham, and Bates were decisioned; Frank Lombardi and Dick Mortimer were pinned.
123--Lee (H) pinned Bass with a reverse Nelson and body press at 4:32; 130--Smith (H) pinned Dolt with a double arm lock and body press at 4:47; 137--MacLean (B) decisioned Iben, 8-2; 147--Adams (H) decisioned Seaver, 5-3; 157--Michael (B) decisioned Anderson, 6-0; 167--Eastham (B) pinned Hastie with a Princeton arm bar at 4:08; 177--Rowe (B) decisioned Keith, 7-0; unlimited (B) decisioned Keith, 7-0; unlimited--Chernak (B) decisioned Heidtmann, 5-2.
