8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
Commuters to the University may have their public transportation fares sliced in half if a bill currently before the Massachusetts legislature is passed. Public hearings on the proposal are scheduled for Wednesday, February 14, before the joint committee on transportation.
The bill provides for half-fares on public bus or subway for all commuters to any college or university. The reduced fare tickets would be available only when classes were in session and fines would be imposed upon abusers of the system.
The transportation committee has not yet committed itself on the bill, but student groups from Boston University, Northeastern, and Boston College have been marshalling support of several committee members to insure a favorable report to the floor. These universities are principally for day students.
High school and grammar students in Massachusetts pay student commuting fares, but college and university students have always paid the full tariff.
