Committee to Consider Extension of Tutorial

A report asking for extensior tutorial--the final part of the "Advising at Harvard College" report--will considered and probably voted upon the Committee on Educational Policy January 9, it was learned yesterday.

The report, submitted by Myron P. Gilmore, associate professor of His would integrate tutorial more closely with the House plan through increased sophomore tutorial. It would have the sophomores in a House in one of the five major departments under the instruction of a tutor.

Because the committee was not unanimous, it offered two suggestions to implement the program. They are: reallocation of sources within a department and more money for the overall program.

Limit Grade in Some Courses

Reallocation of sources, Gilmore stated, would come in two ways. First, because of the high number of graduate students in certain undergraduate courses, committee suggested that the instructor limit graduate student admission. This Gilmore said, would allow the instructor to devote a correspondingly less time to graduate students, who presently take almost all of an instructors time in certain courses, and provide more individual time to undergraduates.

The second plan would be to offer more courses in off-years. By taking time for a year, the lecturer could give increased tutorial instruction. Another plan would shrink regular sections down the size of an ordinary tutorial meeting.

In general these suggestions, Gillmore stated, follow the "Advising at Harvard College" or Bender Report, and the Student Council proposals.

In one major aspect, however, the post differs with the Bender Report and this is in the type of tutorial for senior honors candidates. The Gilmore report requires individual tutorial, while Bender Report leaves this optional.
