John K. Fairbank '29, professor of History, and George Sarton, professor of History of Science, emeritus, two of the world's 1,000 leading scholars, will spend the next five years compiling material for a 3,000,000 word history of mankind--beginning with paleolithic peoples and ending with jet pilots.

The purpose of the undertaking is to correct "existing misinformation and national bias, frequently found in historic texts all over the world."

The work, comprising six volumes and costing $600,000, is sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. After the six volumes appear, the scholars will prepare a two book edition for college use, and a 700 page, single volume, for the man on the street.
